Prof. ThDr. JAN HELLER
Born in Pilsen, he studied philosophy, and theology in Prague and Basel, from 1950. Then he worked at the Comenius Faculty of Theology, first as a lecturer in Hebrew, then as Associate Professor of Religious Studies and from 1977, then as a professor of Old Testament. From 1966-1968 he taught as a visiting professor at Humboldt University and Kirchliche Hochschule in Berlin. He contributed to the emergence of the Czech ecumenical translation of the Bible. He is the author of numerous professional papers, at the field of Religious Studies, which he focused on, ancient religion and the Old Testament biblical studies. After his emeritation in 1992 he continued for some time in teaching, including the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University. He devoted to work on a comprehensive biblical names in Monolingual dictionaries (published in Prague, 2003) and popularization activities. To a wider public he is known as the author of novel interpretations of biblical texts, published in collections as Plowing with the Devil (2005), Trail of the Rocks (2006), Difficult sections of books of Moses (with a sudden M., 2006), and reflect on the radio Sunday Bible readings to worship (part was printed: Signs referring to the sky, 2007).
